Transforming U.S. Fisheries

"The best report of its kind I've ever seen." -- Bruce Babbitt, former U.S. Secretary of the Interior

Overfishing not only decimates fish populations, it ultimately deprives fishermen of their livelihood.

The "Oceans of Abundance" project detailed a solution that replenishes the environment as well as financially benefiting fishermen.

It was crafted by a bipartisan, blue-ribbon panel of elected officials, industry experts and eminent marine scientists.

They submitted this detailed blueprint to the incoming Obama Administration, calling for a transformation in US fisheries management to a "catch shares" system.

Art served as lead writer, editor and creative director for this report. It became the panel's consensus document and was circulated to the Obama transition team, members of Congress and the media.

Result: A panel member (Jane Lubchenco) was chosen by Obama to lead the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Catch shares have since become the nation's signature fisheries innovation.
